With Veterans Day approaching, I wanted to pay my respect to all Veterans by visiting the memorial monuments around the Shaler area, which includes Reserve, Millvale, Etna, and Shaler. I hope you enjoy viewing the many pictures as well as reading my summarized thoughts and impressions about each of the beautiful monument sites. Check out the full article here…

A Veteran’s Walk in the Park
8/2/2025

I’ve been taking daily walks in the Hartwood Park for many years. Why? I’ve found that walking has two major benefits that I take very seriously. The first one is the physical exercise benefit for my heart and body.  That seems to be a pretty obvious no-brainer. The second, and just as important reason, is for my spiritual and mental health well-being.  So, it benefits the total package, right? Read the full article here…

R&R Flight Ticket. Saigon to Honolulu Round Trip.
9/7/2025

Some people might say that I acquired a round trip ticket from hell to paradise and back to hell again. I would have a hard time arguing that point of view!

Nine months into my tour, I had accumulated some leave time and was also entitled to a 7-day R&R as well. For historical purposes, I thought I would post pictures of my flight ticket that I found while going through some old files. You can see the ticket pictures here…

Too Little Too Late?
3/13/2025

Just my opinion…

Even though it is hard not to, I feel that holding on to and harboring resentment about the past rejection and unjust disrespect that I faced upon returning home from a thankless war, really serves no purpose today, other than to make me appear as a bitter old man. Read the article here…

An interview with Robert Kuhn

10/25/2024

I recently hired a professional beta reader named Gabriella Michaelis to help me with my new book Jean’s Heroic Journey.   I was so impressed with her work that I asked her to work her magic on my older book Rucksack Grunt as well. As it turned out, apparently, the book piqued her interest not only in the experiences that I detail in my Vietnam memoir but she also wanted to delve more deeply into my views of the Vietnam war as a young soldier and now an old veteran. You can read the full interview here…

The M16A1 Rifle, operation and preventive maintenance
12/4/2023

This is pretty cool!

At some point, shortly after arriving in Vietnam, we were given a cartoonish booklet about the M-16 rifle. I don’t remember for sure but I think it was handed out to us newbies during some sort of orientation training at Cam Ranh Bay.

Having just completed advanced infantry training a few weeks prior to arriving in country, I must have felt that I didn’t have a need to read the book, because I never even opened it.

50+ years later, I found it stashed away in one of my file cabinet drawers. The booklet is still sealed in its original plastic container. You can view all 30 pages by clicking here…

Vietnam War Coins
12/27/2022

In my book I describe finding enemy caches while we were out on a search and destroy mission in the mountainous jungles of the Central Highlands. Among the variety of items that were found hidden among some large rocks on the steep terrain was a bag full of coins. The guy that actually found the coins passed out a handful to each of us squad members. Close-up pictures of the coins are posted here…

Did Do you have PTSD?
What is it like? How does it feel? What did you do about it?

My Army Tribute Bike
October 10, 2021

In my retirement years, I enjoy my hobby of fixing up old motorcycles. I have fun with the challenges and it keeps me busy. I got lucky and found a rare 1980 black and gold Midnight Special with the intention of restoring it to its original glory. So don’t ask me how on earth I ever decided to build an Army tribute theme bike instead! You can read more about the build here…

Vietnam 2Afghanistan
August 15, 2021

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is vietsoldiers3jjpg.jpg

What’s currently transpiring in Afghanistan is extremely disturbing to me. I suspect that I am not the only Vietnam Veteran who is distressed by yet another U.S failure on the world stage. What we are seeing is a Military victory that once again has been floundered by our government and its politicians who are the scourge of this country! Read more…….

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tour365-frontcover-1.jpg

At some point while processing out of country and just before departing Vietnam, I was handed the Summer 1971 issue of Tour 365. The magazine was an authorized publication of the United States Army, Vietnam. It was published semiannually for distribution to the soldiers returning to the United States upon completion of their tour in the Republic of Vietnam. Begin reading Tour 365 here…

Am I a Real Vietnam Veteran?
Feb 17, 2021

Have you ever asked yourself that question? I have, and I’ve struggled with the answer since the day I returned home from Vietnam in January 1972. That in itself seems to be an odd statement. Of course, I am a Vietnam Veteran if I did a tour in Vietnam. Right? Well yeah, I was there but the question is: “Am I a ‘REAL’ Vietnam Veteran?” Read the rest of the essay here…
