Iran, Vietnam 3 ?

Be Done. (A poem about the decision to go to war). This has been heavy on my mind and is my first attempt at poetry. My apologies to the recently departed Country Joe. RIP.

Be Done

Uncle Sam’s got himself in a terrible Jam,

Way down yonder in Islamic Iran.

To the leaders who have never carried a gun,

To the ones who say, “We’ve already won.”

I’m afraid you don’t understand.

This is not a one-night stand.

It’s not a game of tag,

“You’re it! We’re done!”

~

While sitting in the safety

of your pristine office,

Seeking glory on the backs

of our sons and daughters who die.

Trust those who have past fought,

Those who know, and understand why.

It is NOT gonna be a whole lot of fun!

To say it will be easy would be a great big lie.

~

Conflict is and will be despised,

But in the world’s best interest,

Although decried, there are times

When war is just and must be done.

So when you choose to do this, be wise.

Don’t miscalculate the value of truth and trust.

Those concepts may escape you, but try to

understand; To win, they are a must.

~

So, please, for our country’s sake,

and for our troops’ sake,

Ignore your self-interests

and political inclination

to cut and run.

IF we have to do this war,

Be honorable, be honest.

Do it once, do it right,

WIN it, and be done!
